It can change the feeling of the week to come. May feel less like this:
What would you do?
Here's the Radiolab episode Alix describes. Save it for a rainy day, a road trip, or listen to it right now. If you aren't familiar with the show, please check it out. It will enlighten you.
Glorious Daisy Bevan talks about her relationship with her mother. Do you talk sex with your mother? Is it triumphant, trashy, or somewhere in-between?
Watch and tell us what you think....
In case you missed it the first time around... Did you know the vibrator was originally a tool doctors used to treat women's "hysteria" in the 1800's? Did you know in the 1900's women could buy their own handheld-vibrators and deal with this hysteria at home?
All the pleasures of youth…will throb within you.
But, the vibrator disappeared as a useful medical device once it was connected to women's sexual needs, which obviously aren't a real thing. Even if female sexual desire is legitimate, doing anything about it, I'd say even talking about it, means you're slutty. Which reminds me, have you birth control supporters mapped yourself on this Slut Map? Read more about the history of the vibrator over at Alternet..
This thing looks like it belongs in the garage next to a saw. What's in your drawer? Vibrators have definitely come a long way!
We've all been there....
Jocelyn Elders was the first African American and second woman appointed Surgeon General of the US. In 1994, while speaking at World AID's Day, Elders was asked if masturbation might discourage kids from engaging in sexual activity at too young an age. Should it be discussed in sex-ed courses? Her answer:
I think that it is part of human sexuality, and perhaps it should be taught.
Well, you can imagine the response to this filth! Elders was way out of bounds. Young teens don't masturbate. And even if they did, Shhhh! It's better for everyone when kids think they're the only ones that have those special feelings. Remember: Not talking, is the best way not to talk about reality. In the end, the Clinton administration forced Elders to resign. Yes, THAT Bill Clinton. Maybe if he'd polished-his-knob on a regular basis he wouldn't have Lewinskied.
In 1995, Good Vibrations, a San Francisco sex toy retailer and sexual health and empowerment educator, declared May National Masturbation Month in Elders' honor.
Don't miss the history of the vibrator. AND...While we're on the topic, check out the Ola from our cool friends over at Minni. ------->
I'm obsessed with Radio Lab. I forgot about this video until I just thought of it. If it's raining where you live, sit by the window and watch. Enjoy!
Just watch it....
This is our 22 year old fat-tailed Leopard Gecko, Louise, with my brother and his cat Blackout. Only the pets have proper names. If you try this at home, make sure the larger party is satisfyingly fed prior to nuzzling.
We are all Sluts, so wave your slut flag high. Submit your own slutty story (aka The Reason Why You Use or Support Birth Control) by Clicking Here.
Experience other slutty reasons such as:
- Before I was on birth control I would have to skip 2 days worth of my college classes because of such intense pain at the beginning of my period. Now I can go to class.
- I don't want to have children until I'm able to provide them with the best life possible.
- I'm proud to be liberated from my biology - a person, not just a breed mare.
- Primarily not to have any unwanted pregnancies!

Check out this great excerpt from what looks to be a fantastic book by Eric Berkowitz called, Sex and Punishment: Four Thousand Years of Judging Desire. It's about the West's gory attempt to regulate human desire. The definition of forbidden sex has changed a billion times over the years, and the fight has been extremely bloody in the past. Berkowitz of course touches on America's war on porn and masturbation, which is still quite lively.Let's not forget Rick Santorum's campaign promise.
Ok, I might be the only girl that hasn't seen Girls yet. Maybe one day. In the meantime, this is pretty funny.
The circle of life. Something makes everybody keep going.
I've been w-a-i-t-i-n-g for Here We Go Magic's show at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn for over a month now! It's finally tomorrow night! Joyeux Noel!
I posted the video for their song "Collector" after the fold. To tie all this together, That's What She Said has some great interviews coming up about collecting, and hoarding. It is pretty fascinating to hear people talk about what they collect and try to explain why they want to. Click below and watch the video. Bounce in your seat. Do it.
